How a PET/CT Scan is Performed
- Injection: A radioactive imaging tracer is injected into your arm through a small IV. The tracer is not iodine-based and has no side effects.
- Wait: You’ll sit for 60 minutes while the radioactive tracer circulates through the body.
- Scan: Next, you’ll lie on the scan table for about 30 min. The scanner is quiet and there are no breathing instructions.
- Purpose: This is a continuous body scan from head to thighs that creates a GPS map for your doctor to see active cancer cells in the body to determine a treatment plan.
How to Prepare for a PET/CT Scan?
- Fasting: You may be required to fast ahead of the test; follow your doctor’s instructions.
- Medications: Talk to your doctor about which medications can be taken prior.
- Clothing: Dress comfortably and be prepared to remove all metal objects, such as glasses, belt, keys, etc.
- Post scan Instructions: There are no follow-up restrictions. Resume normal living and take your medications as prescribed.
