Uterine Fibroid Embolization

Uterine Fibroid Embolization is a nonsurgical procedure that blocks blood flow to the fibroids, causing them to shrink and alleviate associated symptoms.

The UFE Procedure

  • A small catheter is inserted into the wrist or groin area to access the artery
  • Catheter guided into the left and right uterine artery using X-ray and contrast dye to visualize
  • Tiny particles are injected through the catheter into the uterine arteries that feed the fibroids, cutting off their blood supply

The UFE Procedure – What to Expect

  • Procedure takes approximately 30-45 minutes with a two-hour recovery time
  • Done in office
  • Return home the same day
  • Return to moderate activity next day; full activity after 7 days

The UFE Procedure – Advantages

  • Uterus is spared
  • No incision or scare
  • Less risk than surgery
  • Quicker recovery time (1-2 weeks vs. 6 weeks)
  • Can treat the entire uterus and multiple fibroids at once
