How a PET/CT Scan is Performed

  1. Injection: An imaging tracing agent is injected into your arm through an IV.
  2. Wait: You’ll sit for 30 to 90 minutes while the radioactive tracing agent goes to work finding and attaching itself to cancer cells in your body.
  3. Scan: Next, you’ll lie still for 30 to 45 minutes while the machine scans your prostate and other areas of your body to locate cancer cells. Once the scan is completed, you’ll be able to leave.
  4. Report: Specialists will examine your scan and report their findings to your doctor.
  5. Review: You and your doctor will determine treatment based on results.

How to Prepare for a PET/CT Scan?

  • Fasting: Will be required ahead of the test; follow your doctor’s instructions.
  • Medications: Talk to your doctor about which medications can be taken prior.
  • Clothing: Dress comfortably and be prepared to remove all metal objects, such as glasses and jewelry.
  • Guests: There are waiting rooms at both locations for patients and guests. In Clinton Twp., please limit guests to one (1).
  • Water: Drink plenty of water after the scan to help flush the radioactive material out of your body.
  • Driving: You can drive yourself home after a PET/CT Scan if you did not receive any sedatives or medication that could impair your judgment.
