Michigan Institute of Urology Offers Two New Treatments for Advanced Prostate Cancer
Mon, 06 Jun 2011 07:28:17 MDT
MIU has access to two new, exciting breakthrough treatments for certain men with advanced prostate cancer who have limited treatment options. The new medical treatments are PROVENGE(R) and XGEVA™
PROVENGE(R) an FDA-approved injection, is designed to work differently than hormone therapy or chemotherapy. As an autologous cellular immunotherapy, this treatment uses cells from a patient's own immune system to identify and attack prostate cancer cells.
Treatment with PROVENGE(R) includes three doses, given approximately two weeks apart. After three infusions, treatment with PROVENGE(R) is complete. Potential reactions include fever and flu-like symptoms, but the procedure is generally well- tolerated.
XGEVA™ is indicated for the prevention of skeletal-related events in patients with bone metastases from prostate cancer. Bone metastases can weaken bone, which increases the risk of potentially serious bone complications.

XGEVA™ reduces this risk by helping to maintain bone strength. XGEVA™ is given as a single injection, once every 4 weeks. In addition to XGEVA™, it is recommended you also take calcium and vitamin D daily as prescribed by your doctor. The most common side effects are tiredness/weakness, low phosphate levels in your blood, and nausea.

MIU is committed to offering our patients the most advanced treatments available. For more information about these promising new treatments; talk with your MIU physician or call (586) 771-4820.
